Our Vision Ferndale has a growing population and demand for city facilities that will provide year round health and recreation opportunities for all ages. Past surveys for the Ferndale Parks and Recreation Dept. have identified an indoors public swimming pool and a multiple-use facility as a high priority. A coalition of health care providers, students and concerned parents are sponsoring a citywide revenue bond. It will be presented to the voters in Summer of 2006. The bond will cover capital costs for the purchase of land, construction of a community center, indoor swimming pool heated by a glass blowing furnace, connected community center and purchase of right of ways for a connecting walking and bike trail network. The facility will be owned by the citizens of the city of Ferndale and will be administrated by a board of citizens to be determined at a later date. The Aquatic Center will most likely be under the direction of either the YMCA or YWCA due to their past interest and experience. It will be available for the use by the school swim teams, Boys and Girls Club, church groups, and the general public. The Monolithic Dome building technique will be used for the first time in Whatcom County and provide a FEMA certified disaster shelter for severe weather. An onsite community well and filtration system will provide emergency drinking water in case of disaster. The energy costs are to be offset by the use of a glassblowing studio, which will be leased out to an artist-craftsman-cooperative. The design calls for a matrix of heat exchangers harvesting the waste heat of not only the studio but of a wood fired pizza oven and a large kitchen that can be subcontracted out to various groups for cooperative fund-raisers. An indoor walking track along with a Hydrotherapy pool is a request of the senior citizens. Five large locker rooms will be needed; a men's, ladies/family, seniors, and high school (boys/girls). The idea of the trail system is to connect the community center with a network of pedestrian friendly byways to encourage healthy low cost transportation alternatives. 5-10 % will be earmarked for the purchase of needed right of ways for the Ferndale trails program. A separate board will oversee this aspect of the funds. The Bellingham greenways committee is a good example of how this would operate. The Ferndale city council has made public commitments supporting this area. A final pool and community center design process will include many local citizens, kids, contractors, craftsmen and health care professionals. They will come together to help create a unique world class facility in time for the 2010 world Olympics in Vancouver. If
we work together, we can create something unique and permanent for the
community of Ferndale. |
